My Garage Sale Encounter!
The Power Of An "Unknown Prayer" By Wendy Showalter
Everyday after dropping off my kids at school, I take the back roads home
instead of having to fight the traffic on the highway. The last road I take,
takes me straight across the highway and to the street I live on. Ever since
my kids started the 2009 school year I have noticed a lady walking on this
street for exercise. For months I have passed her walking while I drive
home in my vehicle. On the days that I did not see her I would wonder if she
was sick or having a bad day. She always has a bandanna on her head with
a cap over it. I could tell from day one that this lady had a physical need in
her body. She seemed to be fighting something, just by the way she walked I
could tell she was determined. My guess was that she was fighting cancer.
The Lord laid this lady on my heart. This lady was a stranger to me. I had no
idea what her name was, or where she even lived. I had never told anyone
that I prayed for her. Every time I saw her I would pray that God would
strengthen her and heal her body. Praying for her is something I just did
because God told me to and I knew she did not know I was praying for her
because she had no idea I even existed.
Today we had our Huge garage sale. We had lots of people come by. After
a while it had slowed down a little bit and I looked up. There in front of my
eyes was the lady that God told me to pray for. In shock I told my Mom
“Hey, There’s that lady that I pray for everyday, I don’t know who she is but
I pass her everyday walking and God told me to pray for her”. Mom was in
awwww. Mom said, “You need to tell her that you pray for her”. Of course
I was thinking- “This lady is gonna think I am nuts!” And part of me was so
overcome with emotion that I thought I would cry. I just sat there and told
God that if it was meant for her to know then he would give me the right
words to say. After she chose what she wanted and came to pay for her
things, I said “You’re the lady that I see walking everyday, when I am on my
way home from taking my kids to school”. She said “I walk every day and I
am a walking miracle”. That gave me the chance to tell her that God had
told me to pray for her and that I had been doing so. That’s when the water
works started and she realized that God used someone that had no idea who
she was, to pray for her. She said that she had cancer and that the doctors
have called her a walking miracle. She said through all her treatment and
chemo she NEVER once got sick. She said, today she is strong and there are
no cancer cells in her body. She is healed!!! She hugged my neck and told
me thank you. I gave her both of our CD’s to take with her. Every time I saw
her I would think of our song “He Chose This Valley For Me”. I found out
that she loves music and is the music director at her local Baptist Church. I
have felt so tired from all the work of dealing with this garage sale, but I
feel that God had one purpose in mind and that was for me to meet the lady
that he told me to pray for. It reminded me again of the calling he has placed
on my life and how he has ordered my every step. There is great power in
praying for someone you DON’T even know.
